Down on the 5?
Tell us the last exit.

Nobody breaks down "in Mission Viejo." They break down northbound past Oso, or southbound coming out of the El Toro Y. Give us a direction and the last exit sign you saw and we'll find you.

First

Get the truck as far right as it'll go

Triangles out. Stay out of the cab on the traffic side if you can. If you're stopped in a live lane, or on a narrow shoulder in the dark, call 911 or CHP before you call us — they can get traffic controlled. No repair is worth standing in the fast lane for.

Then call us
The stretch we cover

Cristianitos to Buena Park

RES Heavy is based in San Clemente, right at the south end of this run. That's the fast end. Here's the honest picture of the whole corridor.

The county line to Dana Point

I-5 crosses into Orange County at the Cristianitos Road exit, straight off the San Onofre stretch, then runs through San Clemente before turning inland at Dana Point. This is home ground — minutes away, day or night. The inspection facility sits just south of here.

Capistrano to the El Toro Y

North through San Juan Capistrano and Mission Viejo, past the SR-73 toll road split, up to where I-5 and I-405 divide at the El Toro Y in southeast Irvine. Worth knowing: the Y splits out dedicated truck lanes, so if you're coming apart in there, tell us which set you're in.

Santa Ana to Buena Park

Past SR-55 into Santa Ana, through the Orange Crush where the 5 meets the 57 and the 22, then Orange, Anaheim past Disneyland, the SR-91 junction and Buena Park before the LA County line. Longer run from San Clemente — you'll get a real number on the phone.

What actually strands trucks out here

And what gets fixed on the shoulder

Stop-and-go through the middle of the county is hard on wheel ends and brakes. Long grades heat things up. Most of what stops a truck on this road is fixable where it stopped.

  • Air leaks & brake problems
  • Wheel seals & bearings
  • Blown tires
  • Won't start / won't restart
  • Batteries, alternators, charging
  • Overheating & cooling
  • Lights & wiring
  • Suspension & steering
  • Driveline & U-joints
  • Dash lights & fault codes

If it's something that genuinely needs a shop — major internal engine work, frame damage — you'll hear that on the phone rather than after we've driven out. See how the mobile service works.

When you call

Four things that get us there faster

Direction and last exit

Northbound or southbound matters as much as where — the shoulders aren't the same on both sides, and neither is the way in. A dropped pin texted over is even better.

What it was doing when it quit

Under load on a grade, idling at a light, right after a start. The circumstances usually narrow it down faster than the symptom does.

Make, model and what you're pulling

So the right parts come with us the first time instead of turning into a parts run.

A photo, if it's safe

Text it to (949) 254-4518. A picture of the wheel end, the leak or the dash saves a lot of guessing. Only if you can do it safely.

Straight answers

Roadside questions

How do I tell you where I am on the freeway?

The direction you were heading and the last exit you passed is enough. Northbound or southbound matters as much as the exit, because the shoulders are not the same on both sides. If your phone shows a mile marker or you can drop a pin and text it to (949) 254-4518, better still.

Is it safe to wait on the shoulder of the 5?

Get as far right as the truck will go, triangles out, and stay out of the cab on the traffic side if you can. If you are in a live lane or on a narrow shoulder in the dark, call 911 or CHP first and us second. No repair is worth standing in traffic for.

Do you cover the whole I-5 through Orange County?

Yes, from the Cristianitos Road county line at San Onofre up through Buena Park. RES Heavy is based in San Clemente, so the south end is fastest and the north end takes longer. You will get a real ETA on the phone before anyone rolls.

What if I got put out of service at the scales?

That is a different job and we do it constantly. The San Onofre inspection facility sits on I-5 just south of the Orange County line, and we repair out-of-service violations at the facility so the truck is released without a tow.

Sitting on the 5 right now?

Call. Direction, last exit, and what it's doing. We'll tell you how long before we roll.
