Red means the engine is protecting itself and every mile costs money. Amber means you have time to get somewhere sensible. Most drivers treat both the same way, and it's the expensive mistake.

Read the gauges, write the codes, don't clear them

Oil pressure, coolant temperature, coolant level — those three decide whether you're shutting down now or driving to a safe spot. Write down the exact SPN and FMI, note which lamps are lit, and leave the codes alone. Clearing them to "see if it comes back" erases what we needed to read.

Two kinds of derate, and they aren't related

Same symptom from the driver's seat — the truck won't pull. Completely different causes, urgency and repairs. Which lamps are lit alongside the derate is what separates them.

Engine protection — stop now

Low oil pressure (SPN 100), high coolant temperature (SPN 110), low coolant level. Usually a red stop lamp. The engine is cutting power to save itself and it is not being dramatic — an oil pressure fault driven through is how a good engine becomes a long block.

Emissions inducement — get it handled

DEF and DPF lamps, amber first. This is the staged ladder: a warning, then a torque cut, then a speed limit, ending around 5 mph (SPN 5246 is the inducement severity itself). Nothing is being damaged — but a truck that reaches the bottom of that ladder on a grade is genuinely dangerous, so don't ride it out.

Sensors telling lies

A failed sensor can trigger a conservative default torque map with nothing actually wrong mechanically. That's a good outcome and a cheap fix — but it looks identical from the seat, which is exactly why the codes get read before anything gets replaced.

How a DEF fault becomes a 5 mph truck

The inducement ladder is roughly the same across manufacturers: a lamp, then a torque derate, then an escalating derate or speed cap, then the final stage where the truck is limited to about walking pace — triggered by hours run, key cycles, or a refuel. Every step gives you a chance to deal with it, and every step is easier than the one after.

  • DEF tank empty (SPN 1761)
  • DEF quality — diluted, old, contaminated (SPN 3364)
  • DEF dosing valve or pump faults
  • SCR conversion efficiency low (SPN 4364)
  • NOx sensors, inlet or outlet (SPN 3216 / 3226)
  • DPF soot load high (SPN 3719)
  • DPF pressure sensor or plugged tubes (SPN 3251)
  • Regen inhibited or aborting

Two things worth knowing before you call anyone. Level-based inducements generally recover on their own once the tank is properly filled. Quality, dosing and efficiency faults need the actual problem fixed and then the truck has to verify itself over a drive cycle — and at the bottom of the ladder many engines want a dealer tool to release, which we don't carry. That's an honest limit, and you'll hear it before we roll rather than after.

And never unplug a sensor to get home. That reads as tampering, it makes the situation worse, and it's the one thing that turns a repairable truck into a compliance problem.

What actually gets finished at the truck

Reading J1939 codes, testing DEF with a refractometer, draining and refilling a contaminated tank, DEF filters and lines, dosers, differential pressure sensors and their tubes, exhaust temperature and NOx sensors, exhaust leaks skewing the readings, and a parked regen the dash still permits. Coolant, thermostat and charge-air work on the engine-protection side.

A parked regen runs thirty to sixty minutes at high idle with the tech staying with the truck the whole time, and the tailpipe gets hot enough to start a fire — so it needs pavement or dirt, nothing flammable behind the outlet, and on a red-flag day the truck moves to a lot first. What can't be done here: a filter plugged past the forced-regen threshold, ash-loaded filters needing a bake and clean, cracked or melted substrates, and internal engine work. Those get named on the phone.

Which dash lights mean stop the engine right now?

A red stop lamp, especially with oil pressure or coolant temperature involved, means shut it down as soon as you can get stopped safely — that family of faults is engine protection, and continuing costs you an engine in minutes, not miles. An amber check-engine or a DEF or DPF lamp is a different animal: those are emissions faults, and while they will eventually derate you, they are not destroying anything while you drive to a safe place. The colour matters more than the code.

What is the difference between a derate and a breakdown?

A derate is the engine deliberately limiting power because something told it to. There are two families and they get confused constantly. Engine protection derates come from oil pressure, coolant temperature or coolant level and usually arrive with a red lamp — the truck is protecting itself from damage. Emissions inducements come from the DEF and DPF side, follow a staged ladder, and end at a speed limit rather than a hurt engine. Same symptom from the seat, completely different diagnosis and urgency.

My truck is limited to 5 mph. Can you clear it at the roadside?

Sometimes, and we will be straight with you about the odds before driving out. If the cause is simple — an empty DEF tank, a level sensor reading empty — refilling properly often lets the system recover on its own over a drive cycle. If it is a quality, dosing or SCR efficiency fault, the underlying problem has to be fixed and then the truck has to verify itself, and at the deepest stage of the ladder many engines require a dealer service tool to release, which we do not currently carry. A truck already at 5 mph frequently cannot be released on the shoulder even after the root cause is repaired, and that usually means a tow. You will hear that on the phone, not after we arrive.

Should I write down the codes before I call?

Yes, and do not clear them. The exact SPN and FMI, the lamp colour, and what the truck was doing when it happened are worth more than any description — SPN names the circuit, FMI names the kind of failure. Clearing codes to see if they come back erases the evidence and sometimes resets a counter we needed to read. A photo of the dash texted to (949) 254-4518 is the easiest version of all of this.

The DPF light came on and I run local. Why does it keep happening?

Because a truck that never gets hot never burns its soot off. Passive regeneration needs sustained exhaust heat, and stop-and-go, port drayage and heavy idling never produce it, so everything falls on active regens and the filter loads up anyway. A parked regen fixes today. What actually fixes it is a weekly stretch of highway running at load and less idle time — and expect filter cleanings more often than an over-the-road truck. If the same truck needs a regen twice in a week, something upstream is making excess soot and the regen is treating a symptom.

Can you do a forced regen?

A parked regen the dash still allows, yes — that is a supervised thirty to sixty minutes at high idle, and it clears a lot of early-stage soot problems. A forced regen above the driver-initiated threshold needs OEM software we do not currently carry, so if the dash has locked the regen out we will tell you that rather than promise it. The exhaust outlet gets over a thousand degrees during a regen, so it also needs a safe surface with nothing flammable near the pipe — on a dry-grass shoulder in fire season, the truck moves first.
